General Education Requirements
General Education (GE) for Graduation and Transfer
If You’re Earning an Associate Degree from West: You must complete either the WLAC GE Plan or CalGETC.
If You’re Planning to Transfer to a CSU or UC: You should follow the CalGETC pattern, which is accepted by CSU’s and most UC’s.
Students who first enrolled at West prior to Fall 2025, and have had uninterrupted attendance since then, may follow IGETC or CSU GE requirements.
IGETC & CSU
What If You Started Before Fall 2025?
If you first enrolled at West (or any LACCD college) before Fall 2025 and have taken coursework within an academic year, you may still have the option to use the CSU GE or IGETC patterns. See a counselor for details.
These options remain valid under catalog rights outlined in LACCD policy (AP 4100).
Not sure which GE pattern is best for you? Meet with a counselor to create an education plan based on your goals.
Cal-GETC is designed for all new students starting at a California Community College in Fall 2025. It serves as the unified general education pathway for California Community College (CCC) students to complete lower-division general education requirements for transfer to the California State University (CSU) and most University of California (UC) systems. Students planning to transfer from West Los Angeles College to a public California university should consult with a Counselor to develop a suitable transfer plan.
- Students must have catalog rights prior to Fall 2025 to use IGETC.
- IGETC is for students transferring to a California State University (CSU), most UC’s.
- All lower division general education units required by the CSU and UC must be competed with a grade of “C” or better in each course.
- IGETC may not be advisable for some majors at certain CSU and UC campuses.
- Students planning to transfer from West Los Angeles College to a public California university should consult with a Counselor to develop a suitable transfer plan.
- Students must have catalog rights prior to Fall 2025 to use CSU GE.
