Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)


Our comprehensive Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program is designed with a blend of engaging classroom instruction and immersive hands-on practical training. Program Overview

This a 16-week EMT program consisting of 207 hours of training through lectures, labs, and an internship. This course is taught all in-person but utilizes an online platform for homework and written exams. Students must earn a B or higher and demonstrate competency in all psychomotor skills to earn a course completion, which provides eligibility to take the National Registry exam (NREMT).

Courses

These must be taken in the same semester

Provides a BLS Provider certificate through the American Heart Association.

Lectures on anatomy, patient assessments, medical and trauma emergencies and treatments. 

Labs with hands-on training on BLS, oxygen administration, airway management, lifting and moving patient, vital signs, bleeding control, spinal motion restriction, etc. 

Internship consisting of two 12-hour shifts on an ambulance and/or in an emergency department. Students must complete BOTH requirements of at least 24 hours field training and make 10 patient contacts.

  • Program policies to be read and signed 
  • Proof of vaccinations to the following: MMR, Varicella, TDAP, Hep B, COVID-19, Influenza
  • BLS Provider from AHA or Red Cross (online courses not accepted)
  • ICS 100
  • NIMS 700

Students can enroll with West Los Angeles College right here. Once a student ID is obtained, search for the class ALD HTH 052 and ALD HTH 900. Students enrolling must ensure they will turn 18 years of age before the last day of the course.

This EMT program is 16 weeks. The program consists of 207 hours of training which includes the internship. The class meets three times a week. You can potentially be employed within 2-3 months of course completion!

Adding the course is allowed, however, it is based on 2 things: available seats based on attendance and having all the required documents. “Adding” the course is not a reason to not have the required documents in hand on the first day of the course.

Students must bring their textbook, uniform, and medical equipment. If adding the course, bring all required documents to be reviewed once seat availability is determined.

Students who do not have all required documents, vaccinations, and equipment on Day 1 will be dropped or will not be allowed to add the course. 

Students are allowed to be excused for 17 hours of training. Proper documentation must be provided for hours to be excused. All unexcused absences, tardiness, or leaving early will be documents and tracked. Students who exceed 17 missed hours will be ineligible for a course completion. 

No. Students must wear the approved uniform which they can purchase directly through Ink & Stitch. Students may try on the uniform before purchasing to ensure proper size, but this must be done before the start of the program. Allow at least one week turnaround time on the uniform.

Students must complete a minimum of 24 hours of field training. Students can expect to be directed to help with patient care and use the skills learned in class. Preceptors may ask students to take vital signs, administer oxygen, assist in CPR by giving compressions,  and many other task within the EMT scope of practice. Students are there to learn and are not responsible for the patients.

Yes. Financial aid does cover the cost for most of the expenses, tuition, textbook, uniform, equipment. However, some of the requirements may not be covered, BLS Card, Vaccinations, etc. Check with a financial aid advisor for more accurate advice.
