Online Tutoring and Writing Lab

Get help with your classes through West’s FREE Online Tutoring Program. You may access the tutoring service from any computer with Internet access or at learningcenter@wlac.edu.

How does online tutoring work?

Tutoring is offered online using NetTutor. There are several ways that students can receive tutorial assistance.
 
  • Meet with a tutor in a Live Session at a scheduled time by entering the queue for 1-on-1 interactive tutoring.
  • Ask a Tutor a question by using the online whiteboard to compose quick questions for a tutor.  Students can also upload documents, use the text tool to write out questions or comments or use the drawing tools to compose questions.
  • Visit the NetTutor Locker to watch videos of their previous tutoring sessions, pick up papers or receive feedback on questions that were posted.  
Ready to get started?
 
  1. Log into Canvas and click on your course
  2. In the left Navigation List, select NetTutor
  3. Click on the subject tutor you need.  For example, NetTutor History Tutor.
  4. Select the type of assistance you need; Live Session or Ask a Tutor a Question. You can also select the Tutor Locker to view archived sessions, pick up reviewed papers or to review answers to reviewed questions.

Writing Lab Assistance

Tutors are available to help student with a variety of writing assignments. Email tutors at LearningCenter@wlac.edu to get started. Tutors provide assistance with:

  • Preparing to Write: Thesis statements, outlines, understanding assignment instructions
  • Writing: Assistance with development of essay and supporting details
  • Revisions: Re-organization of your paper, general review of sentence structure and discussion of essay development

Students have access to online library resources all day, every day including:

  • Encyclopedias and dictionaries
  • Research and citation guides and tutorials

Online Counseling

Counselors are available by e-chat (a live back and forth conversation online), email and phone.  Visit our online counseling page.

Assessment

You may satisfy pre-requisite requirements for English, Math, and other classes by petitioning filing a PRE-REQUISITE & ASSESSMENT COMPLETION FORM. Submit ACCUPLACER assessment test results and the petition to appeals@wlac.edu.  Your documentation will be evaluated by Admissions & Records team. An email notification will be sent to your LACCD email.
 

Prerequisite challenges:

If you have the appropriate documented knowledge, experience or ability to succeed in a course, you should submit a Prerequisite Challenge form to appeals@wlac.edu.  For example, if you have taken the Math or English sections of internationally-recognized tests such as the ACT or SAT, you should submit copies of the test scores and the prerequisite challenge form to appeals@wlac.edu.  The form can be found by clicking petition forms.
