Workforce Development Center… Always Developing

The mission of the Workforce Development Center is to provide job preparation, employment services, community service, and service learning for the campus community.

The Workforce Development Center is an ever-evolving collection of programs designed to meet the needs of the unemployed, underemployed, and those seeking a change in career direction through educational programs.

Students take an array of programs through the college for vocational preparation and transfer.  Many enter requiring basic skills.  The staff of the Workforce Development Center believes that preparation is the foundation for success.  To assist students in achieving their goals, the Center coordinates activities with the resources of the college to provide: individual counseling and advisement, child-care services, financial aid, tutoring, student support groups, work-study and internships, job search assistance, referral to community resources, job fairs, referrals to student health and mental health services, basic education, and GED test preparation.  The Workforce Development Center also provides job retention assistance and life skills workshops.

WDC TRiO Programs

In 1965, Congress began a series of programs to help Americans overcome class and social barriers to higher education.  These services geared towards low-income and first generation students were called Special Programs for Students from Disadvantaged Backgrounds.  Today they are known as the Federal TRIO Programs.  Congress initially authorized most of the programs in the Higher Education Act of 1965 and subsequent amendments.  After their authorization, Congress appropriated money for the programs.
