Body Systems & Terminology for Medical Billers

Designed specifically for medical billers, this course teaches terminology by body systems, rather than by word parts, since that’s how billing is done. Use outlines, exercises, and pronunciation guides to develop the basis for a strong medical vocabulary. Learn to decipher, build and understand medical terms by studying vocabulary parts. This course does not presume a background in science or medicine.  *$25 workbook fee payable first class meeting.

Introduction to Medical Billing

Learn medical billing techniques and how to follow up and collect on billed claims. You will also learn how to complete medical and itemized statements. Various types of insurance plans and insurance cards will also be reviewed. Prerequisite:  Medical Terminology.  *$25 material fee payable in class.

Overview of ICD Coding

Learn about diagnosis coding related to physician reimbursement. Understand the principles used to transform verbal diagnoses and surgical procedures into numerical codes; learn about the use and format of the ICD manual. Students must bring ICD/9 Vol 1 & 2, plus text and assignment to class. Prerequisites:  Terminology and Intro to Medical Billing.  *$20 material fee.

This course will introduce you to CPT (procedural) descriptive terms and identifying codes currently being used in the field of medicine. You’ll get instruction in the use and format of the CPT manual. Bring current CPT manual to class, along with text and assignment. Hospital Billing

Hospitals hire the majority of billers, pay well, and have great training and advancement opportunities. This class acquaints you with billing for hospitals and nursing homes, hospices, home health care and outpatient surgery centers. Get familiar with Volume III of the ICD 9; learn to complete UB-92s and process both outpatient and inpatient claims. Find out how to handle crossover claims involving multiple carriers – Sue will teach you in what order to process, and what rates to use, including the complexities of billing Medicare.  Also learn appeals and rebilling of rejected and denied reimbursements. Bring your ICD/9, vol. 3 and CPT. Prerequisites:  ICD & CPT Coding.  *$25 material fee payable to instructor.

Go into greater detail regarding ICD, CPT, HCPC coding and modifiers, and the billing cycle. Also learn to prepare UB92s for Medicare, Medi-Cal and private carriers; discuss Explanation of Benefit forms and collections. Workers' Comp Guidelines for the Medical Profession

Learn tips for screening patients up-front to minimize payment problems, as well as all aspects of workers' comp lien processing. Covers exclusive jurisdiction, entitlements, lien and appeals processes. Prerequisites:  Terminology and Intro to Medical Billing or six months experience in a health care setting. Computerized Medical Billing

In this hands-on computer class, you will find out about the life cycle of a medical claim and create and file a hypothetical claim. Work with the UB92 form and learn to generate operational and management reports. Prerequisite:  ICD Coding or CPT Coding (do not bring books). Enrollment limited to 20 students.   *$20 materials fee payable to instructor for handouts and disks.
