Make Your Own  Sushi

If you knew sushi . . . you’d make your own! You’d have fun and do it for about one-fifth of what it costs to eat at a sushi bar. Kenji will explain how to make sushi rice and talk about the principal ingredients (where and what to buy) and food safety. Next he’ll demonstrate, and then you’ll make, three types of rolls:  hossomaki, a thin, spicy tuna roll; chumaki, a medium-sized roll with shrimp or salmon skin; and uramaki, with the rice outside as in a California roll. Nigiri sushi will be discussed, but not prepared. Bring a towel, a sharp, non-serrated, thin-bladed kitchen knife, two mixing bowls, a cutting board and your appetite!  *$15 material fee payable to instructor. Register early for this popular class that always fills up.

Kenji Ishida is the marketing manager for Asakuma Sushi Delivery. He does sushi catering for the entertainment industry, is an HACCP and seafood certified food handler and teaches sushi making.

Does your mouth water for great barbecue? Then let Capt. Barbeque come to the rescue. Learn from this barbecue master how to cook the most succulent and savory ribs, brisket or chicken. Thursday, you’ll learn about the types of barbecue styles, pits, woods, charcoals, selecting meats, techniques and you’ll sample some ‘cue. Then Saturday it’s BBQ party time! Jim will do his magic on the grill, you’ll cook a bit yourself and get down to some good eatin’. You’ll visit four students’ homes and get  practical redesign tips in real-life settings. “Most rooms are boxes, and boxes are boring!” says expert designer Bonnie Brown. Learn to let go of linear thinking, get in touch with your creative side and think outside the box! If you want your home considered for a class visit, bring interior/exterior photos and floor plans (if available) to first meeting. Great fun, just like your favorite TV show!

Landscape Design

Landscape designers figure out what elements bring out the best in a location. It may be a specific tree or bed of flowers, or perhaps a deck, patio or bubbling fountain. In this class, you’ll learn the basic principles of landscape design that you can use to beautify your yard and save lots of money in the process. Discover what design principles work best for small places, shady areas, large lots, hillsides and more. You’ll review plans and pictures of your site and learn valuable, basic pruning techniques. The warm summer sun beckons gardeners, and this class is great for new homeowners or those who want to upgrade their yards. Bring photos of your site, a simple hand-drawn site plan, a 5-gallon rhaphiolepis plant (Indian Hawthorne), pruning shears, and a snack or sack lunch.

Charlotte Chen has been a landscape designer and builder for 22 years and has taught for more than 16 years. She was a featured landscaper on Landscapers’ Challenge on HGTV.

Container Gardening

Pots and other containers are ideal design elements for your patio, garden, balcony or indoor space. They’re beautiful, versatile and so easy to tailor for your particular wants and needs. Lillia Singer, owner of Bella Garden Designs, will cover the basics of designing with containers, including the best plants, how to arrange them and what does and doesn’t work. You’ll discuss soil, proper watering and feeding of container plants and how to unleash your imagination and mix in non-plant items. You’ll plant and take home your own 12-inch terracotta pot with three 1-gallon plants, and leave class with some great ideas to spruce up your place. *$30 material fee payable in class to instructor for pot, plants and potting soil.  Come get the hots for pots!

Animal Massage

Much the same way that humans benefit greatly from massage, dogs, cats, horses and other animals can benefit too. In fact, animals of all species, breeds, size and age appreciate massage—especially older dogs, those suffering from arthritis, and animals that compete in athletic events. Benefits of massage includes increased mobility, flexibility, relaxation, longevity and a boost to the immune system. In this workshop, Jan will teach you how to massage your pet, demonstrating sequences, touch and hand positions. While the class is geared to pet owners, pet groomers, walkers, sitters, vets and vet techs will surely benefit. Bring a snack for yourself. Do not bring your pet to class.  *$15 material fee, payable in class, for book and certification of completion (allow 3 weeks).

Jan Stewart , ACS, is a certified canine massage therapist and since 1998 is the owner of an animal massage business, “For the Comfort of Animals.” She has taught at Pierce College for 2 years.
