Yoga

Yoga is an ancient technique of mental and physical rejuvenation. Benefits include increased energy, deep relaxation and balance within your mind and body. Our very gentle Yoga incorporates breath with movement and tailors postures to the individual. You'll learn various breathing techniques and poses (asanas) and you'll leave feeling calm and refreshed. Our instructors are trained to work with your physical needs and abilities. Try a Sunday morning or Thursday night class. Wear warm, loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel. Eat no more than a light snack in the two hours prior to class.

Introduction to Tai Chi Ch'uan

Originating in China hundreds of years ago, Tai Chi Ch’uan is a gentle, moving meditation that conditions the body and mind, leading to a heightened sense of well-being. In this course, you’ll begin learning the Tai Chi “form,” comprised of poetically-named movements that strengthen muscles and bones, improve circulation and the functioning of internal organs. Relieve stress, and improve your focus and concentration. All courses are suited to both beginning and continuing students. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Peter Asco has been practicing Tai Chi for over 23 years and has taught for 15 years, including at his own studio, UCLA and for the City of L.A.

Boxercise

Boring workouts on a stationary bike or treadmill just don’t cut it these days. Try Boxercise, where you’ll sweat and have a blast at the same time. This aerobic workout combines basic boxing techniques and conditioning with aerobics. Energizing, motivating music will add to a great workout that lots of fun. Bring a towel and water; you’re gonna sweat!  Note, the June-July class will be held off campus at a dance studio near Olympic & Bundy in West L.A.—about 5 miles north of WLAC. Directions given upon registration.

Mat Pilates

Pilates’ popularity has really soared the last decade because it’s a great way to improve body conditioning and flexibility. Mat Pilates is a harmonious mind-body workout, requiring a foam mat and no special equipment. The focus will be directed at activating the “powerhouse” muscles and conscious breathing to strengthen, lengthen and tone the abdomen, pelvic cavity, lower back, glutes, hips and thighs. By performing concentrated movements of your arms and legs, you’ll improve your body’s alignment, enhance your balance, increase muscular control and get invigorated. Therapeutically based, it is ideal for rehabilitating injuries. Bring a yoga or Pilates mat, towel and water. Eat no more than a light snack two hours prior.

Tanya Rutter (Mon) and Cristina (Sun) are both experienced teachers and certified mat pilates instructors and certified personal fitness trainers.

Salsa Blast Workout

Come have a blast exercising to the hot Latin rhythms of Salsa music. This aerobic dance workout with a Latin flair is sure to get your corazón pumping and feet thumping. Learn some hot, Latin dance moves while toning muscles and burning calories. Muy caliente. Note, this class is held off campus at a dance studio located near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles—about 8 miles north of WLAC. Directions given upon registration. The instructors are working professional dancers and teachers from the studio.

Stretch & Tone

Capoeira

Capoeira is quickly becoming a popular activity in the U.S. It’s an Afro-Brazilian martial art that dates back centuries and combines self defense, music and dance. There’s lots of sound and high energy in a “roda” (game) where participant perform kicks, sweeps and escapes. Capoeira increases your strength, agility and flexibility and aligns the mind, body and spirit. It’s great exercise and great fun. Bring water, a towel and wear athletic shoes. Note this class meets off campus at a dance studio in Culver City. Directions provided upon registration.

Basketball Workout

It’s time to lace up the high tops and shoot some hoops! Hone your basketball skills and participate in fun, but competitive games. Start with a warm-up of basketball drills, cross training, and shooting and then break into teams and play half-court games in the gym. Denise has run lots of camps, and she says to think of this as a mini fantasy camp without the overpaid cocky superstar athlete and high cost. Men and women, any level of play, age 16 and up, welcome. So come join the fun. Bring a basketball, towel and water bottle.

Denise Woods is a high school P.E. instructor and coach with a Masters’ in Communications.

Even Serena and Venus Williams were beginners once. In this class, beginning students will learn the five basic shots: forehand, backhand, volley, overhead and serve. By the end of class, you’ll be ready to play a match. Participants should wear tennis shoes, bring a tennis racket and two new cans of tennis balls to their first class. These classes are limited to 10 students and they fill up quickly, so register early!

Michael Lanahan, is a member of the U.S. Pro Tennis Association and is a former USTA national junior coach. He has coached six U.S. national junior champions and is the head pro at the Westwood Club.

Aqua Aerobics

Are you too worn out and stressed at the end of the day to exercise? Join Donna’s aqua aerobics class! Water is soothing and relaxing (and no messy sweating!) yet your muscles definitely get a workout. Water exercises provide increased resistance and can improve cardiovascular health and muscle tone, even help you lose weight. Plus they’re low-impact and especially forgiving for persons who have orthopedic problems, need physical therapy or are out of shape. And you don’t even need to know how to swim because the WLAC therapy pool is only four feet deep.

Donna Hurley is a certified exercise instructor who teaches aqua aerobics, swimming and other classes for several health clubs in L.A. and has worked with professional athletes. She was also a trainer on Celebrity Fitness Challenge.

Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program

If you have mobility challenges due to arthritis, surgery or joint injuries, this doctor-recommended aquatics class can really help. This national program has been approved by the Arthritis Foundation and the water exercises can help improve your range of motion, balance and strength, with the goal of reducing your pain. The class is held in our 4-foot-deep indoor pool—so you don’t even need to know how to swim—and the warm water is gentle on your joints. Plus our pool features an access ramp with a railing for easy entry and exit. So come join us in the pool for a fun, yet safe, time exercising.

Cristina is a certified Arthritis Foundation aquatics program instructor and holds several fitness certifications.

Parent & Me Water Fun    Ages 6 Months to 36 Months

Kids take to the water really well if you expose them to it at an early age. Here’s a great opportunity to get your child comfortable in water, have fun and bond. Mom or dad will get in the pool to guide their child in activities. Children will be introduced to kicking, paddling, arm movements, backfloats, blowing bubbles and more. This is a recreational class and does not teach swimming. Infants MUST wear a swim diaper. Enrollment very limited and these classes fill up quickly, so register early.

Cristina is an experienced parent and me swim instructor and certified aqua aerobics teacher.

Fencing

Westside Extension is teaming up with the Los Angeles International Fencing Center in West L.A. to offer fencing classes. It is the largest fencing center in California with 20 fencing strips.  The coaches are highly qualified, having taught three fencers who participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Introduction to Fencing

Fencing is an Olympic sport with a long history and a strong tradition, being one of only four sports to be included in every Olympics since 1896. It is a western martial art for the mind and the body, and helps to develop agility, balance, hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking. In this introduction to fencing, you will learn to fence with one of the three fencing weapons—epée, foil and saber—each month (see listing below). You’ll be taught the fundamentals of the sport, including body position and distance, footwork, tempo and right-of-way situation and learn the particular style and set of rules for that month’s weapon. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to challenge one another in fencing bouts. En garde!

Ice Skating

This class is designed for the skater who has never skated or had formal ice skating instruction. You’ll learn basic forward and backward skating, snowplow stops, swizzles, backward wiggles and forward crossovers. Class fee includes skate rental and public skating the day of each lesson. Hockey 1
