Let's Dance

You see everyone else enjoying themselves on the dance floor at weddings, parties and formal events and you want to join them. Come learn how! In this introductory class, have fun learning the basics of dance posture and footwork. Then apply your new skills and confidence to learn current dances like the Cha-Cha, Foxtrot and Waltz. Please wear comfortable shoes and a smile. Bring a partner, or come alone, but get ready to dance and have fun!

Linda Lees was a gold medalist ballroom and swing dancer. She also teaches dance at L.A. Valley and L.A. City Colleges.

Line Dancing

There's absolutely nothing you need to know about this class except that you'll have so much fun! Learn the steps for various basic line dances that can be adapted to virtually any style of music-from country and R&B to Latin, swing and even hip-hop. This class is great for beginners and dancers of all levels, and best of all, you don't need a partner. Leave your stress at home and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. And bring a towel—you're gonna move in this class!

Nawili Gray is a fitness instructor who has been line dancing since 1999 and teaches through Dance for Life Fitness.

Hip-Hop Dance

Hip-hop dancing is more popular than ever, and even if you’ve never danced before, you’ll catch on quickly. Start with a stretch and warm-up and isolation exercises. Then with Lisa’s help, you’ll break down the latest dance moves into manageable parts, working toward a complete hip-hop routine. Have fun, and get a workout at the same time. Note, Thursday classes will be held off campus at a dance studio near Olympic & Bundy in West L.A.—about 5 miles north of WLAC. Directions given upon registration. Wear comfortable clothes.

Lisa Kellogg has been a professional dancer for 17 years and has taught hip-hop and other dance classes for 16 years.

Belly Dancing

This ancient art form celebrates women, tones torsos, fosters self-confidence and can be performed for a partner! Discover North African and Middle Eastern culture and music, learn basic finger-cymbal techniques and veil work; find out about the beautiful costumes. No previous dance experience necessary; wear non-baggy, comfortable clothes. Register early for this popular class.

Elissa Kyriacou has a degree in dance and is a professional dancer (“Najwa”) who has appeared on Cheers, Who’s the Boss, and Entertainment Tonight. She’s danced in 14 countries and is on faculty at UCLA and CSUDH.

Salsa Dance

Everywhere you go in L.A., it seems you hear Latin music. Makes you wanna dance, right? But if you don’t know how, don’t run off the dance floor—step on over to this class. It’s not as hard as it looks. In this beginning class, you’ll learn popular Latin dances like Salsa—an upbeat style that is easy to learn. Bring a partner, or come alone, but get ready to dance and have fun! Note this class is now held on campus.

Mas Salsa–Salsa 2

Want to really impress your Salsa partners with your flair? Would you like to be known for your dance style? Well if you’ve taken Salsa dance, then come for Mas Salsa and learn more styling and patterns to enhance your enjoyment of the dance. Dance with other students who already know the basics of Salsa Dancing.

Samba

You say dance, we say Samba! The sexy Brazilian dance of samba is seen everywhere during Carnival in Rio do Janeiro. Come experience the history, culture and music of this larger-than-life-fantasy opera dance that makes Carnival such a spectacle. Monica will teach the parade style that is taught in the popular samba schools. Learn the famous Passista step, known as Samba no Pe, and other positions. Develop skills in center floor, parading, and one-on-one samba school style. Students must wear smooth soled shoes; women should wear platform heels.  *$15 (cash only) material fee for Samba dance book, payable to teacher.

Monica Tibbs, aka “Queen in Rio,” is a certified world dance instructor who has taught Samba dancing for eight years. She earned the highly coveted dance position Rainha da Bateria (Queen of the Drums) at Carnival.

Argentine Tango

You’ve seen this fascinating, romantic dance on TV and in movies—now come see how it’s really done. Anyone can learn to dance the tango, a vibrant, sexy dance where you really get to express your creativity, personality and style. Come learn the authentic Argentine style of tango as it is danced in the clubs of Buenos Aries. Singles and couples are welcome. No experience necessary. It's Swing Time

Swing dance is hot! And it’s not too late to jump on the dance floor. Single-time Swing, also known as “jitterbug,” is easy to learn and easy to adapt for many fast musical styles. You’ll also learn Triple-time Swing, which you can dance to slower, bluesy music. Note, this class is held off campus at a dance studio located near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles—about 8 miles north of WLAC. Click here for Directions and Parking information for this class. Tap Dancing
Learn basic tap dance beats and rhythms, riffs, locomotor steps, and center floor combinations. Great exercise and fun for absolute beginners or those with some experience. Tap shoes recommended. Ballet

Tone-up, improve posture, develop muscle strength and gain coordination through ballet! (Did you know ballet could do all that?) Learn basic ballet positions, port de bras and center floor combinations. Great for absolute beginners as well as those with some experience. Wear dance attire or clothes you can easily move in. Ballet shoes recommended but not required.

Jaimie Keppel has been a ballet dancer since age four. She has been teaching dance and musical theater for many years in Los Angeles, New York and Germany.

Beginning Hawaiian Hula

Discover the beautiful, graceful moves of the Hawaiian hula and the hip-shaking allure of the Tahitian hula. Judy will teach you the basic hula moves as you learn a complete hula by the end of five weeks. You’ll come to embrace the wonderful expressive aspects of hula, get a great workout and have a fun time. Plus, learn some Hawaiian words and find out how to throw a luau. Wear comfortable clothes.  *$5 optional material fee for Hawaiian music tape.

Judy "Kalei" Lee was a professional Polynesian dancer for 17 years. She has taught Hawaiian dance in Hawaii, California and New Jersey.
