C-BEST Preparation

If you’re interested in teaching at the K-12 level, passing the California Basic Education Skills Test (C-BEST) can get you in the door. This workshop will cover the same math, reading and writing skills that appear on the C-BEST (next offered on Aug. 9). Take assessment tests and practice C-BEST math and reading comprehension tests. Learn how to organize and write effective essays and grade your own writing. Also find out how to apply for teaching jobs with the LAUSD, other districts and private schools.  *$20 material fee payable to instructor first class meeting (cash only please).

Write Successful Grants

There is great demand for good grant writers in both the public and non-profit sectors. Childcare centers, schools, colleges, universities, community centers, churches and other faith-based organizations need and use grants. Learn the basic steps for seeking out appropriate grants and writing promising proposals—including how to identify community needs and estimate budget. Find out about the various types of grants available and learn how to fill out a typical paper grant packet and grant E-forms. Individuals cannot get grants for personal uses, but you’ll discover the ways you can partner with organizations to get grants. *$10 material fee (cash only) for guidebook and sample grant packet.

Become a Notary Public    now with state exam

Government institutions, banks, real estate and mortgage companies, and private businesses are seeking notaries for official paperwork. All notary applicants must first complete a course approved by the California Secretary of State. Our approved course will explain the functions of a notary and give you the updated 2008 information and knowledge you need to perform the duties correctly and to pass the state exam, which you can now take immediately following the course. Becoming a notary can be a great way to enhance your career or earn extra money.  Seminar attendance and break time is strictly monitored. Check-in will take place 7:30-7:50; class must begin promptly at 8:00. Have ready your current, official photo ID and *$8 material fee (cash only), payable to instructor at check-in. You must attend entire seminar to receive a completion certificate. Bring a sack lunch. Students wishing to take the state Notary Public Exam may register for it from 4- 4:30 pm; the exam will be given from 4:30-5:30. Note:  There is a $40 fee for the state exam. Bring official photo ID and a separate $40 check made payable to the “Secretary of State.”

Be Heard and Not Seen: How to Do Voice Overs

Voice over actors are those unseen individuals who breathe personality into TV and radio ads, movie trailers, animated characters, and lots more. Some of the best ones are very recognizable, but they didn’t get their jobs by accident. They got them by knowing the voice over process. In this seminar, voice over actor Aaron Meza will cover the basics of voice over and tell you how to establish a practice routine at home. Find out about the process of reading copy and get tips on etiquette and lingo in the studio. You’ll also learn about making a demo reel, when to seek out an agent or join the union and how to market yourself. Discover the many possibilities of using your voice to make money. Note: this is not a voice workshop.

Aaron Meza is a voice over actor whose voice is heard on numerous commercials, including those for Taco Bell, Lexus, ABC, Subway, Mercury and FedEx. He is a member of SAG and AFTRA and won a 2004 Telly Award for narration.

Writing a children’s book is one thing—getting it published can be a challenge of it’s own. Discover how to evaluate whether your book belongs with a small, medium or large publishing house, an educational publisher, a library or a specialty publisher. Then learn how you can market your book to achieve optimal success. Find out how to select a publisher, write an enticing cover letter, when to propose your book, what to include in your resume and how to format your manuscript. Jim will show you how and where private investigators obtain their information. Find out where public records are held and how to search them. ACE Personal Trainer Certification Prep

If you’re considering becoming a personal fitness trainer, a well-respected fitness certification can be the key to getting good employment. The ACE Personal Trainer Certification is highly regarded in the fitness industry. This class is designed to help you prepare to take the ACE Personal Trainer Certification exam (next offered in L.A. on Aug. 2). In the classroom portion, you will cover exercise physiology, biomechanics, how to teach others to perform exercises properly, motivating your client, basic training principles and techniques, safety and liability issues, marketing yourself and lots more. Plus each day you will conclude with an hour of practical, hands-on work in our weight room or cardio lab where you’ll apply the principles and techniques discussed. Get a chance to demo the actual strength training and flexibility exercises a trainer would do. *Required text: Personal Trainer Manual by ACE, 3rd edition ($55, go to www.acefitness.org to order). Read the first four chapters prior to the first class. Wear exercise clothes and bring a towel and water.
