Introduction to Fencing     (Ages 8-18)

Westside Extension is teaming up with the Los Angeles International Fencing Center in West L.A. to offer fencing classes. It is the largest fencing center in California with 20 fencing strips.  The coaches are highly qualified, having taught a silver medalist fencer in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and three fencers who participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics. The class fee includes all fencing equipment and the membership fee. Click here for Directions to LAIFC.

Fencing is an Olympic sport with a long history and a strong tradition, being one of only four sports to be included in every Olympics since 1896. It is a western martial art for the mind and the body, and helps to develop agility, balance, hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking. In this introduction to fencing, students will learn the difference between the three fencing weapons—epée, foil and saber—and the different styles and set of rules these three weapons use. Students will be taught the fundamentals of the sport, including body position and distance, footwork, tempo and right-of-way situation. By the end of the class, students will be able to challenge one another in fencing bouts. En garde!
