General Information:

8 week class – starts 6/18/2007, ends 8/12/2007.

This course takes place entirely online. No on-campus visits are required. 

The course begins on June 18.  You must access the course by June 23 or you will be dropped.

Course Description:

Note: Same as Spanish 21 with Spanish 22.

Co-requisite: Spanish 101 lab.

This is the first term of a two-term sequence in first year Spanish. Communicative proficiency is the main objective. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are developed with emphasis on the active use of these skills. Culture is incorporated into the course in textual and visual materials to stimulate interest and reinforce understanding and appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world.


Required Materials:

VISTAS: Introducción a la lengua española 2nd Ed., Blanco, Donley

EN LINEA code + Vistas Student text + Vistas WebSAM code, ISBN1-59334-801-0. This package option has a student textbook which is optional for the class.

EN LINEA code + Vistas WebSAM code, ISBN1-59334-800-2. This package option does not have a student textbook.

Although students are encouraged to purchase the Vistas, 2nd ed. textbook code(s) at WLAC bookstore or directly from Vista Higher Learning at: www.VHLDirect.com/westla/ in advance, you will not be able to login to the course until the first day of class.

VISTAS EN LINEA and WEBSAM codes are NOT available as a USED package. Due to the nature of the contents, we are unable to provide them USED. We are sorry for the inconvenience.


Course Requirements:

The course is conducted in Spanish except in the case of linguistic difficulty when appropriate explanations in English may be supplied. Vocabulary and grammatical structures are presented and you, students, are given oral and written practice in class, including interactive group work and presentations. Outside of class, students read assigned texts for comprehension, do their homework online, and write exercises to be reviewed by the instructor. Students are expected to make an effort to participate in class activities and conversations, and to respond to questions in Spanish.

It is highly recommended that you have DSL access to the Internet and that you have a microphone attached to your computer in order to interact with your classmates and the instructor online.

Grading Policy:

Class Participation - Compositions/Oral Projects = 10%

Vistas eText EN LÍNEA - Homework = 15%

Five Quizzes = 15%

Midterm Exam = 25%

Final Exam (Lessons 1-9) = 35%
