Rita Shemwell is originally from Boise, ID and moved to Los Angeles in 1975. She has been a student of life for over half a century, having been a waitress for over 20 years and attending Bryman in 1985 to become a Nursing Assistant. She then attended Nick Harris Detective agency and became certified in 1995. Ms. Shemwell came to West in 1998 as a student who needed to learn computers if she ever wanted to secure another job in her lifetime. She graduated from WLAC with an A.A. in Computer Science in 2005.
Ms. Shemwell started working in the computer and language lab on the first floor of the HLRC (library) in 1999 and worked there until September of 2000 at which time she began her career in the Distance Learning program office as a student worker. Ms. Shemwell has been technical support for both students and faculty for over 12 years now.
Ms. Shemwell notes that in the year 2000 there were only three classes offered online and now West offers over 400 classes online, hybrid or web-enhanced (on- campus) courses. Ms. Shemwell believes that it is a sign of the times, "It has been a great experience watching our online program grow so much over the past decade and the increasing number of students who need/want to take online classes. With the increase in classes offered online this has helped meet the demands of students who have very busy lives and can't make it to campus on a weekly or daily basis. Proving that people do want an education, but the times need to be flexible and work with their daily schedules."
