SPANISH 21 – FUNDAMENTALS OF SPANISH
General Information: This is an 8-week class starting on 5/22/06 and ending on 7/1/06. This
course takes place entirely online. No on-campus visits are required.
Students who do not email instructor by May 26th will be dropped.
Course Description: Co-requisite: Spanish 101A lab. Note: Spanish 21 and 22 together are equivalent to Spanish 1. This course provides the first half of the fundamentals of Spanish 1. It stresses pronunciation and grammar as well as provides practice in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing simple Spanish. Students are introduced to Spanish and Spanish-American civilization through simple readings. Emphasis is placed upon the spoken language. Required Materials: VISTAS: Introducción a la lengua española 2nd Ed., Blanco, Donley. EN LINEA code + Vistas Student text + Vistas WebSAM code, ISBN#: 1-59334-801-0. This package option has a student textbook which is optional for the class. EN LINEA code + Vistas WebSAM code, ISBN#: 1-59334-800-2. This package option does not have a student textbook. Students will access EN LÍNEA, the electronic version of the printed Vistas 2nd ed., an optional textbook, as their homework. EN LÍNEA delivers its components entirety online with automatic scoring, plus includes the complete Fotonovela Video. It is required the use of a microphone to interact online with classmates and the instructor. Course Requirements: The course is conducted in Spanish except in the case of linguistic difficulty when appropriate explanations in English may be supplied. Vocabulary and grammatical structures are presented and you, students, are given oral and written practice in class, including interactive group work and presentations. Outside of class, students read assigned texts for comprehension, do their homework online, and write exercises to be reviewed by the instructor. Students are expected to make an effort to participate in class activities and conversations, and to respond to questions in Spanish. It is highly recommended DSL as your internet provided and the use of a microphone to interact with your classmate and your instructor on line.
