how to find a book

iLink by SIRSI is the new Online Catalog at the Los Angeles Community College District. Click on the iLink icon at the terminal Desk Top to access SIRSI.

 

You can search by SUBJECT, AUTHOR, TITLE, WORDS OR PHRASE, or SERIES.   You may search all of the LACCD libraries.  The default Library is West Los College Library (WLAC).  For example, type in the subject “AIDS Disease,” you will find the list of books on the subject at WLAC Library.


You can also search for eBooks (Electronic Books) (part of NetLibrary)

1.1 Quick Search

1.1.1 Search by SUBJECT – Click on SUBJECT. The iLINK online catalog uses Library of Congress Subject Headings as its subject authority.  Once you have determine the subject you want to search (e.g. “Cancer”), you type the subject term in the search box.  Then, iLINK will show you number of hits in West LA Library (also will show what is available in all the LACCD libraries when you pull the Library box menu down).


iLINK shows where the book is located in the library (e.g. STACKS, REFERENCE, RESERVES) and where it is shelved by its CALL NUMBER (e.g. RA781.15.B58 1999 * ).  It also shows the availability of the item (e.g. Available, Check-Out). Click on DETAILS, to see the full bibliographic reference.


1.1.2 Search by AUTHOR – Click on AUTHOR.  Type in the author’s surname, then first name to search (rest of the procedure is same as above)


1.1.3 Search by TITLE – Click on TITLE.  Type in the title of the book you want (rest of the procedure is same as “1”).


1.1.4 Search by WORDS OR PHRASE – If  you do not know the exact title, name or subject, you can type in that phrase /word to search


1.1.5 Search by SERIES – Type in the title of the Series to search (e.g. Dictionary of Literary Biography)

1.2 . Reference

iLINK has the Power Search function (aka Advanced Search).  Power Search allows you to refine a search by combing different search elements (e.g. author AND title AND subject), performs Browse Search and  Call Number Search.


A Browse Search looks for a cataloged heading beginning with the first word of the search string.  A Browse Search produces an alphabetical list of items matching the search string.


The Call Number search lets you browse the “library shelves” by call number.


eBooks (Electronic Books) (part of NetLibrary) – Books are also available in electronic format in the West LA collection.  The students may check out these books to read online for a specified time (e.g. 6 hours, 24 hours).
