Welcome to the West Los Angeles College Foundation
The West Los Angeles College Foundation was established in 1974 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our single focus is to advance the students and programs at West Los Angeles College.
Since 1969 West has been the stepping stone to success for hundreds of thousands of students, providing university transfer and career training programs for those starting their post-secondary education. In difficult economic times, West has also helped many adults successfully re-tool for new careers after losing their jobs.
West is an accredited member of the California Community Colleges, which educate approximately 70% of California’s residents. Over 25% of UC graduates and 55% of Cal State graduates started their education at a California Community College. Yet colleges like West receive only 12% of the per student dollars for higher education.
West serves a diverse community including West Los Angeles, Culver City, Venice, Mar Vista, West Adams, Baldwin Hills, Inglewood, and South Los Angeles. Campuses like West do the important work of providing a more affordable bridge to four-year universities and colleges as well as training for career entry and advancement.
Since its founding the WLAC Foundation has been an important partner to the College, giving scholarships to needy and high-achieving students. Over the past five years the Foundation has awarded 287 scholarships worth $167,000 to West students, many of whom would not have been able to buy books or advance their education without the Foundation’s contributions.
To date, the scholarship program has been our primary activity. However, in response to continued budget cuts to the College, we are expanding our efforts to raise funds and create partnerships that will sustain West through the ebbs and flows of state funding. In turn, the resources provided by the Foundation will help fund programs that might not otherwise be affordable through state support alone. Foundation funds will also enable the College to manage its enrollment not in response to changes in state funding but based on student demand for education and training from the communities served by the College.
