NEW MEMBER OF THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Math Professor Mohamad Alwash, a prolific author who is frequently cited in research papers, was recently added to the editorial board of "Journal of Applied Mathematics." Dr. Alwash, who has taught at the university level, enjoys the smaller class sizes at West. "In smaller classes, I get to know how they [students] tick and feel so I can help each student go through the same though processes as I do."

QUALIFIED FOR STATE!

The West Los Angeles College track and field program was the only school to qualify to advance from the Southern

California Championships to the State Championships in both the women’s and men’s 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. In the SoCal meet held this past weekend, the ladies ran 3:45:26 in the 4x400. This is the fastest time run by a California Community College team in 15 years. Wildcats athletes also advanced to State in the men's 400 and 400 hurdles. The women will compete in the long and triple jumps.

IN THE NEWS

Thank you to those who took the bus-rider survey. Over 200 students, faculty & staff responded. Check back in late May for bus updates regarding Fall 2011.

Culver City Agrees to Keep On-Campus Bus Stop For Now

At the March 7 Culver City Council meeting,  the Council agreed to allow an on-campus bus stop to stay put and for there to be lesser but adequate bus service to the on campus. The decision was reached after many testimonials from local home owners and West students, faculty, staff, administrators and other supporters. Thank you to all who sent letters, emails and Facebook posts to the City Council. Special thanks to those who came to the meeting in person to show support and speak. The continuation of the bus stop and service schedule will be re-examined by the Council for the Fall semester.

Your letters of support, addressed to the Culver City Council, for the indefinite retention of an on-campus bus stop and adequate service can be emailed to info@wlac.edu

BACKGROUND: On Monday, March 7, the Culver City Council considered reducing or eliminating the on-campus service they provide to West Los Angeles College. The matter was considered largely due to pressure from some neighbors in the Lakeview Home Owners Association.

In an effort to give some satisfaction to the neighbors but still provide on-campus service to West, the Culver City Transit District proposed a 50% reduction of buses entering the campus. With the Transit District, West looked at times and days where service was most critical and where it was less needed. The Transit District incorporated a number of our requests into their recommendation.  While we do not view the recommendation as optimal, we believe it is acceptable and shows a good faith effort to accommodate our neighbors.
