IN THE NEWS

West Included in First Lady's Speech

As part of the events associated with the visit from China's President, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to a large group of students about the importance of studying abroad. Her remarks included kudos to West for a program currently under development.

The press statement recapping the event said,  "Although community colleges enroll more than half of the undergraduates in the United State, community college students represent only three percent of those who study abroad.  To address this discrepancy, the Center for Global Advancement for Community Colleges (CGACC) is establishing an inter-semester China program in collaboration with the West Los Angeles Community College. The program would offer month-long, study-abroad opportunities tailored to community college students.”

Professor Boutry's TV Episode Airs &

She is Lauded in Inside Higher Education for Presentation

Children’s cable network The Hub aired “The Haunting: The Series” in January. Dr. Boutry is a writer for the series. Additionally, Inside Higher Ed lauded the professor for a recent presentation. “[Prof. Boutry] offered the ultimate in concrete evidence during a discussion at the annual meeting of the Modern Language Association about English pedagogy at community colleges. When students filled out their course evaluations, three wrote that they had gotten tattoos that read “fear no more,” a key phrase from the [Virginia Woolf] novel.” Read the complete article at (http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/01/12/teaching_literature_at_community_colleges)
