Instructor / Alumna Recognized

as Top HR Professional

Lorena Leslie, a West graduate and now a West management instructor, was recently nominated as one of the Valley's top human resources professional at the 2nd Annual Human Resources Professional Awards Luncheon. In addition to teaching, Leslie is the Director of Human Resources at Health Advocates LLC, San Fernando Valley.

 

 

Work With Puente Club Earns Professor K.W. Lee Spirit Award

Fran Leonard will receive a K.W. Lee Spirit Award at the K.W. Lee Center's annual dinner on June 4 at the Oxford Palace Hotel in Koreatown. The award is given in recognition of Leonard’s “incredible work with community college students at West LA, particularly with students in the Puente Project…” K.W. Lee is a renowned journalists who worked in the mainstream and ethnic media for over 50 years.

 

Honors Students Present at Research Conference
Five West Honors Program students were selected to present at the annual Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC) Conference held recently at UC Irvine.  The HTCC holds an annual student research conference giving students community college honors programs students the opportunity to present the results of their work. Scholarships and other awards are given. Moreover, students who present at the conference qualify for priority admission to UC Irvine and many other four-year institutions.

 

The students and their presentations were:

Federal Agencies & Private Corporations

The Hispanic Assoc of Colleges & Universities is sponsoring summer and fall internships with federal agencies and private corporations nationwide. “…matches students’ interests, education and experience with those of our federal and corporate partners. Students receive paid round-trip airfare, housing arrangement assistance, emergency med insurance, a weekly stipend of $450 - $550 depending on their class level, and participating in an intern orientation in Washington D.C.”

Flu Season Information

 

POTENTIAL CAMPUS CLOSURES: As advised by the Center for Disease Control and the Los Angeles Community College District administration, it is unlikely that the campus will close in the event of student or employee being diagnosed with the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu). Instead, the campus will promote healthy practices on campus. However, Faculty/Students should be prepared to move into a distance learning format for class in the event that the instructor and/or a large number of students become ill. Faculty and students should be sure they have each other's respective contact information. Please do report any suspected/confirmed case of H1N1 (Swine Flu) to your supervisor/instructor. This information will be kept confidential.

Instructors do have the authority to ask students to leave the classroom who are clearly ill. This should be done discretely and students should be directed to the WLAC Health Center (A-9) -- Hours: M,W,Th 8:30am-5:00pm; T 10:30am-7:00pm; F 9:00am-12:00pm.
