Track Team Victorious at Western State Conference Relays Meet
West LA College won six of the sixteen relay races held Friday at Ventura College, led by sophomores Lentrail Hicks and Charles Earls, who were part of 3 victorious Wildcat relay teams.  The men's teams won the 4x400 meter relay in 3:19.36, the 5th fastest time in the state.  Their strong showing makes them major contenders for the conference championship this spring.

The Lady Wildcats found success as well, winning the 4x100 meter and the 1600 meter relays.  Also, Starasia Childs led a 1-2-3 sweep in the triple jump, along with Donetta Rye and Nijaw Leshaw.

The Wildcats travel to Cal State Fullerton next Saturday to battle some of the local 4-year schools at the Ben Brown Invitational.

Lady Wildcats Make All-Conference Squad
The following Wildcats women’s basketball players were named to 2010 Western State All-Conference squad:

  • Freshman Ashley Berumen, a 5-9 forward from Franklin High, was named to the WSC All-Conference First Team for the 2010 WSC season.

  • Freshman Donetta Rye, a 5-10 forward from Crenshaw High, received WSC Honorable Mention.

Asst. Track Coach Named to the Los Angeles

High Schools Sports Hall of Fame
Valerie Brisco-Hooks, assistant coach for Track and Field at WLAC, was included in the inaugural class of 55 of the best athletes and coaches from Southern California.  The Locke High School graduate won 3 Olympic gold medals during her track and field career.

Student Profiled in Los Angeles Times

LA Times columnist, and recent guest speaker at West, devoted his March 12 column to a profiling West student Raul Menjivar. Menjivar and his family now reside with his parents due to the economic down turn. Excerpts: "Once upon a time, Menjivar earned $4,000 a month installing hardwood floors, more money than either of his immigrant parents ever made...During the boom years of the last decade, he was a well-paid high-school dropout...Now he's broke but just a few courses away from graduating from West Los Angeles College and transferring to a four-year university. His career dream: teaching high school...Losing his own home also taught Raul the value of an education - something he didn't see when he was a teen...'If I got a job, it would have been minimum wage. I'd just be paying for the child care,' Raul told me. So, he enrolled at West LA College - among other things, it offers free day care. Community college is Menjivar's bridge away from the underclass."

Alumnus Entrusted with Rewording the Hollywood Sign

If you looked toward the Hollywood Hills on February 13, you noticed something very different about the historic Hollywood sign. West alumnus Ramy Baramili, owner of the Culver City based company Signquest, was entrusted with the job of draping a temporary banner over the Los Angeles icon. The banner said "SAVE THE PEAK" and was part of a fund-raising effort by a conservation group to preserve the mountaintop land adjacent to the Hollywood sign from private development.

View the monumental transformation process at www.signquest.com/hollywoodsign (photos) or www.signquest.com/savethepeak (video). Signquest clients also include Sony, Verizon, Westfield Mall Culver City and Ferrari N. America.
