TRACK TEAM TURNS ON THE HEAT


Southern California Track & Field Championships: Gayeshia Robinson finished 4th in the heptathlon at the Southern California Track & Field Championships on April 13th and 14th qualifying for the California State Championships in May. Robinson was the first among freshmen in the 2 day, 7 event, heptathlon event, which consists of the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meters, long jump, javelin, and 800 meters. Joining Robinson in the heptathlon from West LA was Britteny McKinley (14th), Summer Griffin (17th), and Cara Jones (18th)West LA, who is ranked 9th in Southern California gets on the scoreboard for the Southern California Championships with 5 points. The remainder of the SoCal Championships will take place May 8th and May 15th at Saddleback College. 
 

at the 2010 Western State Conference Inland Meet: The WLAC men and women's track and field teams were victorious at the 2010 Western State Conference Inland Meet at LA Valley College. Patrick Hunter won the long jump and the triple jump, and Lentrail Hicks took first place in both the 100 and 300 meters. The women's team was led by sophomore Starasia ...Childs, who won the 100 hurdles, and set a new school record en route to winning the triple jump.

 

AT ANTELOPE VALLEY COLLEGE:  The West Los Angeles College track and field teams represented well at the Antelope Valley College Invitational on Saturday, April 3 with 3rd place finish by the women’s team and a 4th place finish by the men’s squad.  Over 20 schools were in attendance, including over 10 schools ranked in the top 20 in Southern California. 

The Wildcats had victories in both the men’s and women’s 400 meter relay.  Freshman Patrick Hunter and sophomore Starasia Child’s claimed victories in the triple jump as well with jumps of 46’2” and 38’11” respectively.

CLBC Offers $2000 Scholarships - Ap Due Apr 30

The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) Youth Leadership Scholarship, established in 2009, is offering a $2,000 scholarship to youth attending any institution of higher education for professional, academic, or vocational training and development. CLBC’s primary goal in offering these scholarships is to increase the pool of young community leaders by assisting them financially and helping them pursue their educational and personal leadership goals.

The Hispanic Assoc of Colleges & Universities is sponsoring summer and fall internships with federal agencies and private corporations nationwide. “…matches students’ interests, education and experience with those of our federal and corporate partners. Students receive paid round-trip airfare, housing arrangement assistance, emergency med insurance, a weekly stipend of $450 - $550 depending on their class level, and participating in an intern orientation in Washington D.C.”
