WILDCATS UPDATE

 

TRACKSTERS CONTINUE TO IMPRESS

The West Los Angeles College track and field teams represented well at the Antelope Valley College Invitational on Saturday, April 3 with 3rd place finish by the women’s team and a 4th place finish by the men’s squad.  Over 20 schools were in attendance, including over 10 schools ranked in the top 20 in Southern California. 

 

The Wildcats had victories in both the men’s and women’s 400 meter relay.  Freshman Patrick Hunter and sophomore Starasia Child’s claimed victories in the triple jump as well with jumps of 46’2” and 38’11” respectively.  

 

The track team will be back in action Friday, April 9 at LA Valley College for the 6 team Western State Conference Inland Meet.

Art History Professor Lucy Blake

Earns Another Public Art Commission

An artist engaged in both public art commissions and painting, WLAC Art History Professor Lucy Blake-Elahi has also taught art at UCLA’s Graduate Art Education Department. Her current project, recently commissioned by Long Beach Transit, is one of many public art works to her credit. The main part of the proposed project will be a long red fence supporting colorful medallions illustrating the history of transportation in the region.  It will be exhibited along Santa Fe Street at the corner of Del Amo. Other public art works that Blake has worked on include a floor mosaic at the Pasadena Fire Station, installation of sculptures along a street median in Lynwood, and numerous murals and sundials around the Los Angeles area. Lorena Leslie, a West graduate and now a West management instructor, was recently nominated as one of the Valley's top human resources professional at the 2nd Annual Human Resources Professional Awards Luncheon. In addition to teaching, Leslie is the Director of Human Resources at Health Advocates LLC, San Fernando Valley.

 

 

Work With Puente Club

Earns Professor K.W. Lee Spirit Award

Fran Leonard will receive a K.W. Lee Spirit Award at the K.W. Lee Center's annual dinner on June 4 at the Oxford Palace Hotel in Koreatown. The award is given in recognition of Leonard’s “incredible work with community college students at West LA, particularly with students in the Puente Project…” K.W. Lee is a renowned journalists who worked in the mainstream and ethnic media for over 50 years.

Betty Williams, the sister of Dr. Lawrence Jarmon, died on Friday, March 19, 2010. Funeral Services were held Friday, March 26, 2010 at Inglewood Park Cemetery.

CLBC Offers $2000 Scholarships - Ap Due Apr 30

The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) Youth Leadership Scholarship, established in 2009, is offering a $2,000 scholarship to youth attending any institution of higher education for professional, academic, or vocational training and development. CLBC’s primary goal in offering these scholarships is to increase the pool of young community leaders by assisting them financially and helping them pursue their educational and personal leadership goals.

The Hispanic Assoc of Colleges & Universities is sponsoring summer and fall internships with federal agencies and private corporations nationwide. “…matches students’ interests, education and experience with those of our federal and corporate partners. Students receive paid round-trip airfare, housing arrangement assistance, emergency med insurance, a weekly stipend of $450 - $550 depending on their class level, and participating in an intern orientation in Washington D.C.”
