SHAKEOUT COMING 10/18

For the Great Shakeout, anticipate receiving simultaneous emails and text messages telling you that the earthquake drill has begun. Please drop to the floor, seek cover under a table or desk, and hold on for 3 minutes. (Remember, do NOT take elevators nor evacuate buildings during an earthquake in case of falling debris.)

The Safe Zone Program at East Los Angeles is an ongoing effort to make their campus community a more supportive place for undocumented and LGBTQ students. They are sharing their training with the entire District.  Lunch will be provided to the first 40 participants who RSVP to 323-415-5483.

TASTE OF SOUL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

A few faculty and staff are needed to staff the West booth at this year's Taste of Soul on Oct 20. This event attracts over 300,000 people and features great music, food and wares. Shifts are 3 hours between 9:00 - 5:00. Please contact Michelle Long-Coffee to volunteer.

West Receives Department of Education Title V HSI STEM Grant

West Los Angeles College has been notified that it is the recipient of a US Department of Education Title V HSI Individual Project. The STEM TEACHER SUCCESS PROJECT will implement a comprehensive set of best practices strategies to design and deliver a clear, sustainable STEM Pathway to prepare Hispanic and low-income students for STEM careers. This is a five-year grant and a total award of $2.75 million.

Dr. Mary-Jo Apigo, Dean of Teaching and Learning, was the author of this grant. Please join me in thanking Dr. Apigo for her leadership in bringing additional resources to West to help our students pursue careers in STEM fields.

If you qualify for a Fee Waiver then you probably qualify for a Pell Grant. This is money you typically NEVER have to pay back that can be used for RENT, BOOKS, FOOD and other living expenses. You do NOT have to be a full-time student to qualify. Students can received up to $6095. It's NOT too late to apply for this academic year.
