Why Is West
Cancelling the Summer Session?
The State of
California is facing an unprecedented budget crises. Funds counted
on to operate the college have been severely cut. To ensure strong
class offerings in our primary semesters (Fall 2009 & Spring 2010),
we had to cut the Summer 2009 session, including online classes.
Why Are the Other 8
LACCD Colleges Offering Some Summer Classes in June?
Because of West’s
recent rapid growth, we were already serving more students than we
had funding to cover, thanks to the cooperation of our committed
faculty and staff. With the directive from the District to go no
further over our current funding levels, we had to eliminate the
Summer 2009 Session to ensure a strong Fall and Spring semester for
our students.
Transfer / Graduation:
Will 2009 Graduation
Still Be Held on June 9?
Yes! We look forward to
celebrating our student success in these difficult economic times.
I have conditional
admissions to a university for Fall 2009 but need one or two classes.
What should I do?
Immediately, bring your
conditional admissions letter to the General Counseling Office in A-13
and they will assist you in finding a solution.
I am one class short of
graduation, what should I do?
Immediately, visit the
Graduation Office in A-13 and they will assist you in finding a
solution.
Priority Enrollment:
If I was enrolled in
a cancelled Summer 2009 class, will I get priority enrollment into
that same class in the Fall?
Unfortunately, we can
not give you priority enrollment. We highly encourage you to enroll in
your desired Fall classes now if you have not already done so. A link to
a list of open classes is provided at the top of this page. Also, if the
Fall course you want is full, check back periodically as spaces may open
if other students drop the class.
|
Dropping Classes / Refunds:
Do I need to “drop”
my summer classes? How will the cancellation of summer show on my
transcript?
You do not need to
“drop” any summer classes. You will be automatically withdrawn from the
course and no notation (i.e. “W”) will be noted on your transcript.
I’ve paid for summer
classes. How can I get my refund?
Please visit or
call the WLAC Business Office for your refund.

Financial Aid:
I need an additional
class(es) to maintain my eligibility for financial aid as I did not
complete sufficient units in Spring 09? If I can’t get a class, will
I have to repay the “overpaid” financial aid funds?
You may make up your
units at any other California Community College this summer. If you
dropped the class well after the mid-point, you will not be required to
payback any overpaid financial aid. If you are unable to enroll in a
summer class, you will need to complete a petition in the Office of
Financial Aid to avoid being disqualified for financial aid in
2009-2010.
|
Social Services:

must be a full time student to qualify for my benefits. Will I lose

Options:
Could we start
classes in June to get around the need to cancel summer classes at
West?
No. Because of
West’s recent rapid growth, we were already serving more students than
we had funding to cover, thanks to the cooperation of our committed
faculty and staff. With the directive from the District to go no further
over our current funding levels, we had to eliminate the Summer 2009
Session to ensure a strong Fall and Spring semester for our students.
Is West less
financially secure than the other LACCD campus? Is that why they can
offer Summer classes and West can’t?
To the contrary,
West has endeavored to be responsible financial managers. West has
experience more growth and more rapid growth than others in recent
years. Again, we were already serving more students than we had funding
to cover thus we had to eliminate the Summer 2009 Session to ensure a
strong Fall and Spring semester for our students.
Will full-time
faculty/staff be laid off?
Furloughs and/or
salary reductions may have to be considered. However, West is striving
diligently to remain fiscally responsible and avoid these steps and/or
layoffs of full-time faculty and/or staff to ensure the deliverance of a
quality education for our students.

Fee
Increases:
Will enrollment
fees be
going up in the Fall?
Given the news from
the Governor’s Office, it is likely that tuition at all California
Community Colleges will rise. We do not yet know the amount or in which
semester a fee increase might be implemented. However, the Board of
Governors Fee Waiver Program will continue to be available for all
eligible students this fall.
