STEPS TO STAY HEALTHY

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue (or your arm) when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

  • WLAC Student Health Center is a free on-campus resource for students and employees.

  • If you are sick, stay home. If you have influenza like illness (ILI), CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.

  • Instructors have the authority to ask students to leave the classroom who are clearly ill

and maybe coughing, sneezing or otherwise exposing the class to an illness. Instructors are asked to do so discretely and direct the student to the WLAC Student Health Center.

REPORT ILLNESS

Should you contract the H1N1 virus, please report it to your instructor/supervisor. This will allow the campus to take any appropriate steps needed. (Note: any such report would be treated confidentially).

Supervisors, please notify your Vice President of any reports of H1N1 illness. They will contact Michelle Long-Coffee, Director of PR/Advertising.

IN THE EVENT OF

CLASS SWITCHING TO DISTANCE LEARNING FORMAT / CAMPUS CLOSURE

STUDENTS: In the event that your class would need to convert from an on campus to a distance learning format, you will be contacted by your instructor or other representative from Academic Affairs. Be sure that your instructor has accurate contact information for you and that you have your instructor's contact information. In the unlikely event of campus closure, information will be posted on the web site at www.wlac.edu or from your mobile phone visit www.wlac.edu/mobile. Signs would also be posted at the campus entrance and you will receive an automated phone call with information.

INSTRUCTORS: Please be sure to gather students' contact information at the outset of class. And, make a contingency plan for if your class needed to be conducted remotely. (see President's Update from May 6, 2009 for suggestions)
