Mission

In keeping with the overall mission of the Athletic Department, the Wildcat Sports Medicine program is completely committed to student success, in all areas of our student-athletes growth. Our goal is the successful development of each student’s maximum potential academically, athletically and personal success.  Our mission is to ensure the optimal health and wellness of the West Los Angeles College student-athletes through care and prevention of athletic related injuries, and where necessary, we will provide the highest quality sports medicine professional assistance available.

The health and welfare of our student-athletes is our primary concern and our athletic trainers will use the latest techniques and modalities to provide treatment and rehabilitation for athletic injuries, in returning our athletes to competitive form.  Our Head Athletic Trainer communicates effectively on a daily basis with the injured student-athlete, our head coaches, our team doctors and their referral network to provide the best available health care for our student-athletes.  Our Head Athletic Trainer is also aggressive in pursuing an agenda for continuing education, so that we will remain on the cutting edge of the ever changing sports medicine horizon.

Athletic Training

The West Los Angeles College athletic training staff consists of a full time NATA certified Head Athletic Trainer, Victor Pulido, along with several Athletic Training Students (ATS).  Mr. Pulido is also assisted each semester by two collegiate senior intern trainers, from the athletic training educational programs at Loyola Marymount University and Cal State Northridge University.  The goal of Mr. Pulido and his staff is to provide the best possible sports medicine care, with the health and welfare of the West student-athletes of paramount importance.

In addition, the athletic department has entered into a unique partnership with the highly respected, exceptionally qualified and experienced medical professionals from the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.  This partnership provides our students with some of the premiere sports physicians from the Western United States and the Los Angeles area.  The WLAC athletic trainers also work with a network of specialists from dentists, neurologists, internal medicine professionals, to optometrists and orthopedics.

Our nationally certified Head Athletic Trainer and his staff are in charge of the health care of our more than 275 student-athletes in ten competitive teams.  They cover practices and home game competitions and travel to road games where appropriate.  Mr. Pulido is responsible for evaluating and assessing athletic injuries, administering first aid and injury care, making medical referrals and establishing treatments for the recovery and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses.  Mr. Pulido and his staff also do a great job of educating our student-athletes in injury prevention, sports nutrition, rehabilitation and reconditioning following surgery or injury, as well as how to deal emotionally with athletic related injuries.

The Wildcat athletic training room is located in the C-1 Building adjacent to the football and soccer artificial turf field and nine lane all weather track.  The state of the art co-ed facility is well equipped with sports rehabilitation equipment, ultrasound, electric stimulation units, whirlpools, ice machines, treatment tables, and a private office for the Head Athletic Trainer.  The training clinic is open daily during the season from noon to 7:00pm and approximately two hours prior to home games.

Our student-athletes also have access to an on-campus Student Health Center which is open daily to serve the physical and psychological needs of our student body.
