The Athletic Department at West takes pride in placing academic excellence as the number one priority, and we are committed to supporting the recruitment, retention, graduation and transfer of our student athletes.

The Athletic Counseling Office assists prospective, current and former WLAC student athletes in identifying their educational, vocational, career and personal goals. Additionally, guidance is provided in the establishment of student educational plans, advisement pertaining to the California Community College Athletic Association athletic eligibility rules, as well as NCAA and NAIA transfer rules.

The office is headed by full-time Academic Athletic Counselor, Jawell Samilton, who is a former local community college transfer student who received an athletic scholarship to Arizona State University.

Professionally, he has worked as a History and Social Science instructor, an Assistant Football Coach, and College Counselor at several educational institutions. Mr. Samilton was hired as a full-time Counselor at West Los Angeles College for the Athletic Department in 2007.

Mr. Samilton has been instrumental in facilitating an ethos of accomplishment from the moment student athletes are admitted to West until they successfully matriculate on to four-year institutions of higher learning. He actively seeks to help our student athletes succeed in the classroom, develop as a person, and cultivate intelligent decision making and leadership skills.

Recognizing Excellence

The athletic department at West also promotes academic excellence and celebrates the academic success of our student athletes by honoring scholar athletes who graduate with an associate degree or certificate, as well as those who attain a 3.0 grade point average and complete at least 12 units each semester. The department has also recently established a "Scholar Athlete of The Month" and the "Student Athlete Of The Year" awards in an effort to promote academic and athletic excellence amongst the student athletes at West.  Finally, there are additional opportunities for our student athletes to be nominated and honored for their efforts through various conference and state associations such as the California Community College Athletic Association, the Western State Conference and the Southern California Football Association.

Additional services include:
