NURSE ASSISTANT
An introduction to the health care field, working with residents/patients in long term care facilities, the acute care setting, and the home care setting.

GERIATRIC CARE TECHNICIAN
A specialized program, in conjunction with the Nurse Assistant program, that is  designed to fill the employment gap of caregivers working with the elderly.

INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH OCCUPATIONS
(3 unit course online)

Learn about different health care careers, including work descriptions, work environment, employment opportunities, educational requirements, and earnings, as well as the United States health care system.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY 
(evenings & weekend format  Fridays for 6 weeks, partly online).

Learn about medical terminology and basic anatomy and how to apply this knowledge to a   variety of allied health professions, and develop a basic understanding of anatomy and the function of major body systems.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRAINING (EMT)
Prepares students to function as basic life support providers on ambulances responding to emergency calls, or work in hospital emergency departments and clinics. This is the first step toward becoming a paramedic.

DENTAL HYGIENE 2 YEAR PROGRAM 
The dental hygienist as a member of the dental health team is qualified by education and license to provide primary care to patients for the maintenance of oral health and prevention of oral disease. The program in dental hygiene is accredited by The Commission on Dental Accreditation.

HOME HEALTH AIDE
The Home Health Aide course builds on the knowledge, skills and abilities of Nurse Assistants and focuses on the skills needed to provide care for home bound individuals and assisted living facilities. This course is approved by the Department of Health Services. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be certified as a Home Health Aide Provider. Pre-requisites for the course are successful completion of Nursing 399A or be a Certified Nurse Assistant in the state of California.

About the Allied Health Division

The West Los Angeles College Allied Health Division was founded in 2003 to meet the growing demands for health care professionals in the community. Since 1978, West Los Angeles College has offered one of the top Dental Hygiene Programs in the country. West Los Angeles College is continuing this fine tradition through the development of partnerships, programs and new curricula to meet the education needs of other health care professions.

The Allied Health Center houses the Dental Hygiene Program, Registered Dental Hygiene in Alternative Practice Program, Emergency Health Services Programs offered in association with UCLA, and other allied health courses.

The Allied Health Center embraces community involvement and as such has established an Advisory Committee comprised of leaders in the healthcare industry to guide program decisions and development.
