THE ASSESSMENT TEST
ASSESSMENT
IS A TESTING SERVICE USED TO HELP YOU IN SELECTING
THE RIGHT
CLASSES
IN ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS AND ESL.
YOU
SHOULD PLAN TO TAKE AN ASSESSMENT TEST AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE.
SCORES
ARE VALID FOR TWO YEARS.
YOU
WILL NEED TO TAKE AN ASSESSMENT TEST IF YOU ARE:
- Planning
to earn a degree. (AA, AS, BA, BS)
- Planning
to take an English and /or Mathematics class and have
not met the prerequisite classes.
- You must
have an application on file in Admissions before taking
the Assessment Test. Call the Admissions Office at
(310) 287-4501.
ENGLISH ASSESSMENT TESTS
The English test may include writing a short essay
and/or multiple choice items in reading comprehension
and grammar. Your recommended English placement is
based on the combined scores of these assessment tests
and a review of factors that may influence your success
in a course. English 28 or English 101 is required
for graduation.
ENGLISH
AS A SECOND LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT
This is a separate test especially for non-native
speakers of English and measures general levels of
achievement in writing, vocabulary, grammatical structures,
listening comprehension and reading comprehension.
Students taking the ESL assessment test may be recommended
to take ESL 3 through ESL 6.
MATHEMATICS
ASSESSMENT
A student's background in mathematics will be assessed
by this test. Proficiency in elementary Algebra, Mathematics
115, is required for graduation. Mathematics 115 has
been modified to extend for 2 semesters for students
who seek a complete understanding of basic mathematics
principles. This class is Mathematics 117 and is highly
recommended for students needing a complete review.

Center and Student Entry Center, A12-101.
ASSESSMENT
AND ORIENTATION SCHEDULE
- 2 hours
for the English examination and 1 hour for the Mathematics
Assessment.
- If you
tested for English 21 or below or Math 105 or below,
consider Leaming Skills classes. For more information,
see a counselor or see the Leaming Skills Specialist,
in the HLRC, Room 121. The specialist conducts diagnostic
testing to determin the patterns of your leaming strengths
and weaknesses and will help you discover how to study
more effectively and learn.
- If you
think you may have a Leaming Disability, contact the
Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Office.
EXEMPTIONS
All students enrolling in courses for credit are required
to participate in the matriculation process unless
exempted.Students who hold an AA/AS degree or higher
are exempted from all components of the matriculation
process except Admissions. The following students
are exempted from orientation, counseling and advisement,
and follow-up, but will be subject to the matriculation
process if their status changes. These are students
who are:
- taking
6 units or fewer,
- enrolling
in personal interest courses,
- are concurrently
enrolled in another college, and/or
- not intending
to complete a degree from WLAC.
Students who do not plan to take English, English
as a Second Language or math do not have to participate
in the assessment component.
BRING
A mandatory photo ID, two sharpened #2 pencils. Space
is limited. No admission after the exam begins.
