 ACCREDITATION STATUS

West Los Angeles College is fully accredited through 2018, by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an institutional accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education.

West Los Angeles College has been notified of the Accrediting Commission’s action on its application for reaffirmation of accreditation. In its cover letter to the college, the Commission wrote,  “The Commission acted to issue Warning and to ask that West Los Angeles College correct the deficiencies noted.  The College is required to complete a Follow-Up Report by March 15, 2013.   The report will be followed by a visit of Commission representatives.”

West remains fully accredited while on Warning. Classes continue, and credits apply toward degrees and certificates and remain transferable to universities and colleges.  Student financial aid eligibility continues unchanged. In fact, the visiting team acknowledged that high-quality teaching and learning are evident at West.  Commendations included praise for the overall campus climate, career preparation programs, the online learning program, delivery of student services, our shared governance, the grants development and partnership efforts, and our efforts to address achievement gaps between student populations.

“The accreditation process reminds us as educators that we must continue to strive for excellence in our instructional program and our services to students, as well as in the organizational standards of good practice that are expected of us under ACCJC standards,” said College President Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh. “I believe that addressing the Commission’s concerns is well within West’s reach and doing so will be of highest priority.”

FYI: The following wording in the recommendations indicates to what degree the college fell short of meeting the standards from least to most problematic:

    • In order to increase effectiveness and improve its compliance with the Standard
    • In order to fully meet the standard
    • In order to meet the standard
    • In order to meet the Standards and Eligibility Requirements
