MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to West Los Angeles College!
At West we like to say “Go West. Go Far.” This spirit permeates every area of the college from the classroom to the counseling office to the sports field and student clubs. Our goal is to help you prepare to excel at the university level when you transfer or in one of the many technical careers for which we offer training.
West is set on 70 acres in the hills of Culver City which provides it with a 180 degree view of the Westside from Playa del Rey beach to Century City. Our smaller classes, accessible faculty and the campus landscape give the college a small, private school feel. Within this setting, students of all ages and backgrounds find they “fit in.”
West opened on a rainy day almost 45 years ago only partially completed. Faculty, staff and administrators dedicated to providing outstanding higher education made sure that students received just that despite the absence of finer amenities. We maintain to this day that collaborative spirit to ensure student success. However the facilities are greatly improved. College Boulevard, a half-mile grand avenue, now connects the campus to Jefferson Boulevard just west of LaCienega. We call it the New Road West! Thanks to voter-approved bond construction funds, West has a multistory math and science complex with classrooms and facilities that rival those at any modern university. And our new general classrooms building will open in the coming months integrating technology and multi-media into the teaching and learning environment. Facing it is our new student services building which will consolidate all services under one roof, offering greater convenience and a truly collegiate experience.
West alumni include corporate executives, entrepreneurs, distinguished educators, technology professionals, professional athletes, trades people and front line staffers. In fact, my own former college president who mentored me into this leadership role is a proud alumnus of West Los Angeles College! For some, the journey was straightforward. For others, there was a struggle to overcome poverty or destructive circumstances. All had a goal of reaching higher. We are honored that they chose West to help them achieve their goals. We look forward to helping you do the same - to … “Go Far.”
Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh, President
