Welcome, West Umojans!

Our hearts are filled with joy as we welcome students to the Umoja Village. Your generation of students will carry forth the great tradition of scholarship and success that has served us well over the generations at our esteemed Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's). And, you will do this within the community environment of the Umoja Village.

Please take some time to browse our web pages. Our  Umoja Village has what you need to get through to that glorious graduation day.  When you get there, look around you.  We will be right there with you!

About Umoja:

The Statewide Umoja Program was designed by educators in the Bay area of Northern California who were alarmed at the paltry retention rates of African American Students.  The programs and classes offered by Umoja employ some of the techniques used in successful HBCUs--Historically Black Colleges and Universities--nationwide.

Fall 2008 marks the first semester that West Los Angeles College welcomes the  Umoja Program.  Why WLAC?  We have the highest number of African American students of any community college West of the Mississippi. Many times, these students  come to college shocked to learn that their high schools did not prepare them adequately to pass college-level English and Math. Also, they find that the campus environment is sometimes a disconnected place.  The Umoja Village is a place where these students are taught, mentored, tutored and encouraged to stay enrolled until they can transfer to the 4-year college of their choice and complete their college degrees. Welcome!
